"This photo was taken in Siwa Oasis, Egypt in February 2012. This boyâs house is just around the corner from the Oracle of Amon which today is mainly remembered for being visited by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE. In Siwa, like in some other parts of the world, child marriage and child betrothal customs still occur so children get married off as early as possible. Here children are forced to grow up and get accustomed to adult life. They ride motor bikes, trucks, wheel carts, camels, donkeys, horses, and not only can they bear arms, hunt animals, go walk about in the desert but actually bear the capability of leading a tribe. This carefree moment came as a surprise to me because ordinarily, most boys his age were just riding their donkey carts, be it carrying groceries back to their families, supplying to some shop keeper or transferring their women from one end of town to another. I was amazed by his creativity and initiative. This shows that anything can become toys to children. After all, we are all children of dreams."
